Joseph Bastian’s “sensational debut” with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks caused international excitement when, in February 2016, he took over a Brahms-Berg-Elgar programme in the middle of a concert week, after a conductor’s cancellation. Critics praised the young conductor for transforming this jumping into an artistic triumph (Abendzeitung, Munich). Only a few months later, in August 2016, Joseph Bastian was awarded the Neeme Järvi Prize at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival and Academy, as a result of which, he will tour Germany with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra in April 2017.
Born in France to a Swiss-French family, Joseph Bastian has been Chief Conductor of the Abaco- Orchestra of the Munich University since 2011. He started his music career playing the cello, trombone and learning composition, before studying trombone at the University of Music Saar. He played with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez, and became member of the Orchestra Academy of the Munich Philharmonic in 2002. Since 2004, Joseph has held the position of bass trombone player with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
Having conducted a variety of orchestras in Germany, including most recent debut with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Bastian’s career is rapidly developing. His forthcoming engagements include debuts with the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Kammerorchester Basel, Berner Symphonieorchester, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Münchener Kammerorchester, Nürnberger Symphonieorchester, Duisburger Philharmoniker and Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg.
Bastian has participated in number of conducting masterclasses with Bernard Haitink with Lucerne Festival Strings, David Zinman with Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich and Jorma Panula with Noord Nederlands Orkest. As an Assistant Conductor, he has worked closely with Mariss Jansons and Daniel Harding with the Choir, Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Academy of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. In March 2017, he assisted Vladimir Jurowski with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Penderecki’s St Luke Passion.
He is also active in the field of historically informed performance practice, and plays regularly sackbut (Les Cornets Noirs), serpent and ophicleide (Berlin Philharmonic, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks).
